José María Lafragua Historical Library

Meritorious Autonomous University of Puebla

The José María Lafragua Historical Library of the Meritorious Autonomous University of Puebla is part of the Office of the Vice President for Extension and Dissemination of Culture. The Library is located in the emblematic Carolino building at the historic center of the city of Puebla. The history of the Library comprises the different historical trajectories of various bibliographic collections constituted at different times. All these collections, in different dates and for various reasons, were eventually incorporated into the José María Lafragua Library. Through the centuries, the Library had different names according to the institutions that owned it, starting in the 16th century as the College of the Holy Spirit of the Company of Jesus until the contemporary Meritorious Autonomous University of Puebla. It should be noted that since the 16th century, the library has always been located in the Carolino building.

The thematic diversity of its materials makes the Library a living testimony of four different institutions. Collectively, these have created a bibliographic collection destined for the moral and scientific formation of academic, secular, and religious communities.
