The Huntington Library is one of the world’s great independent research libraries in the fields of British and American history, literature, art, and the history of science. Its collections of rare books, manuscripts, prints, photographs, maps, and other materials number more than nine million items and extend from the eleventh century to the present. Strengths include medieval manuscripts; incunabula (books printed before 1501); English printed books to 1641; 16th-century Mexican imprints; letters and manuscripts by George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and Abraham Lincoln; materials pertaining to the American West, constituting nearly 40 percent of the Library’s holdings; as well as the Burndy Library of over 67,000 rare and reference volumes in science and technology.
